Les Bleus won their penultimate UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier in style on home soil on Saturday, crushing Gibraltar 14-0 in Nice. With key roles from Warren Zaire-Emery, Olivier Giroud, and Kylian Mbappe, the evening saw both new and broken records created. In Group B, the outcome is meaningless because the French have to lose both of their games to have any chance of falling out of first place. That does, however, make Didier Deschamps’ team the heavy favourites to secure a Pot 1 berth for first seeding in December’s European draw.

We examine the statistics from a historic evening that saw France defeat the underdog Gibraltar.

3 – Kylian Mbappe finished the game with three goals, including a fantastic lobbed attempt from the captain. After that treble tied the score, Mbappe passed Antoine Griezmann to take third place on Les Bleus’ all-time goal scoring list. In terms of debutants for the France national team, Warren Zaire-Emery ranks three; the Paris Saint-Germain sensation is the third-youngest French debutant in history.

7 – Prior to this Saturday, France’s first-half record stood at 5-0, but Deschamps’ team surpassed that figure by going into halftime at Allianz Riviera leading by seven goals. After 45 minutes, goals from Zaire-Emery, Mbappe, Marcus Thuram, Jonathan Clauss, Kingsley Coman, and Youssouf Fofana had already propelled the French to unprecedented heights.

6 – Mbappe made six direct contributions in total—he didn’t only score three goals; he also gave three assists. The AS Monaco player returned the favour by setting up Clauss, Fofana, and Coman for Mbappe’s three goals towards the conclusion of the game, giving the PSG star a sort of double hat-trick.

8 – There were eight different goal scorers in the game, led by Mbappe’s hat trick, Olivier Giroud, who scored the most goals, and Coman, who scored two goals each. Thuram, Clauss, Fofana, Adrien Rabiot, and Ousmane Dembele were among those who participated in the chaos in Nice as the French team outplayed their opponents.

10 – goals was France’s highest goal total prior to Gibraltar, and Mbappe’s strike in the 74th minute for an 11-0 victory established history by surpassing that previous total.

14- It was not just a record-breaking night for Les Bleus, but also for qualifying for the World Cup and the European Championship. The largest winning margin in European qualification history for both the World Cup and the Euro qualifications is now France’s greatest competitive triumph.

17- A player has never made their France debut below the age of 17, however two other notable players have represented France before Zaire-Emery, who is 17 years and 255 days old. The PSG superstar was older than Felix Vial, who was only 17 years and 76 days in 1911, and Maurice Gastiger, who was 17 years and 128 days in 1914.

72- After just 18 minutes with just 11 players on the pitch, Gibraltar was behind 3-0 against France and had to play the final 72 minutes with one man less. If Ethan Santos had not been sent off, it might have affected the score and taken away a few records, but it would not have changed the outcome.

109 – In 1914, Zaire-Emery was just a year away from reaching a decade between him and Gastiger. He is France’s youngest debutant in more than a century.

300 – Before turning 25, Mbappe scored 300 goals in his career for both club and country, something that none of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, or Neymar was able to do. There are 227 goals with PSG, 46 with France, and 27 with Monaco, according to the breakdown.
